Over the past three years I've had the opportunity to work with the amazing ladies on the Get It Scrapped Creative Team.  I've been blown away by their creativity and talent and learned so much from all of the wonderful tips they share. So I couldn't be more excited to celebrate the announcement of their 2014-2015 creative team with them this weekend!

Hi everyone!  Thanks to all of you who took the time to read more about me in my 34 Things I want You to Know About Me list.  It was fun sharing those details with all of you, but even more fun reading though your comments.

I’m honored to be participating in Jennifer Wilson’s 34 Things Blog Party which celebrates all about me scrapbooking and her upcoming Big Picture Classes workshop, Before Your Story.

There are milestone events in life, such as marriage and motherhood, that divide us permanently into a "before" and an "after." It's easy to become so immersed in the after—the glorious here and now—that our "befores" rarely appear in our scrapbooks.

When I read these first few sentences of Jennifer's class description I instantly related and I was eager to join her and  begin telling my story before my kids.  And I'm beginning my journey by sharing this list of things about me with all of you.

34 Things I Want You to Know About Me...

1. I love being a mother, but a perfect mother I am not.


2. I am a list maker. I make lists for everything.  Sometimes I put things on my list that I've already done just for the mere satisfaction of crossing them off.


3. I pride myself on being a lover of all living things, but that's not exactly true.  I don't love snakes, lizards, mice, flies or grasshoppers.


4. I'm not a great driver, I can get from point a to point b, but if I'm being honest I'd rather someone else drive.


5. I never thought I'd live in the same 20-mile radius for most of my life, but I'm happy with where I've ended up.


6. I have mixed feelings about when one of my boys is sick--on one hand I hate seeing them so miserable, but on the other I love being able to hold them close and take care of them.


7. I don't enjoy cooking, but I do enjoy a good meal.


8. I never considered that I might not finish college, but I don't regret it either.


9. When it comes to movies I love a good cry your eyes out love story, spy thrillers and almost anything based on a true story.


10. My high school appeared in several movies and is now a historical landmark.


11. I've always known I was a lot like my mother and now I can fully embrace this.


12. I have a clean freak side to me and a bit of a slob side--each week its a toss up to see which side will win out.


13. My husband proposed to me in front of a restroom, but in his defense it was the only place to pull off in the snowy canyon where we had gone fishing on our first date 5 months earlier.


14. I want so many things for my kids but more than anything I just want them to feel loved.


15. I love to sing.  I love to sing with my husband. And I love when my boys join in too!


16. My favorite book of all-time was Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.


17. I watch a little too much TV and read less than I like to admit, but I've made peace with this.


18. I learned to sew when I was 5, but still can't tie my shoes properly.


19. I love Classic Rock--Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Santana...the list goes on.


20. I've always dreamed of visiting Greece...one day maybe!?


21. I hate jogging and running, I would much prefer to get my exercise cleaning, swimming or climbing.


22. I love breakfast, but rarely eat it.


23. My grandfather was the person who I most looked up to as a child.


24. I read all of the Harry Potter books up until the 7th, which I quit in the middle. I guess I just moved on while waiting for the last book to come out.


25. I fell in love with my husband because he made me laugh and he still makes me laugh every single day.


26. I used to love watching reruns of Matlock and Perry Mason with my mother and may or may not have faked being sick on a few occasions in order to do so.


27. I hate my handwriting--it lacks character.


28. I NEVER thought I'd end up a digital scrapbooker, but I'm so happy I gave it a try!


29. I went nearly 5 years without wearing a spot of makeup and now I'm obsessed with it and love trying out new colors and trends.


30. I long for a new camera, but am also a bit scared to leave behind the comfort and understanding I have of my current camera.


31. I love experimenting with bold colors on the walls in my house, I don't think we have a single wall in our home that is white.


32. I hate brown carpet--so much so that it was a definite deal breaker when we were looking for our first home.


33. Quitting my job to be a stay at home mom was the scariest thing I've ever done, but it turned out to be just what our family needed.


34. I have dreams of owning my own business one day but right now I'm enjoying working with and learning from other business owners and being able to watch my kids grow up.

Here is how I'm using Your December Story in my own holiday memory keeping approach...

Upon first hearing of this class I knew instantly that it would help me to achieve something in this year's holiday album that I felt like had been missing from years prior--a real sense of story.  In previous years I've approached my holiday memory keeping in a variety of ways--sometimes prepared and other times not as much.  But one thing I had never done is planned out my story approach and as a result I always felt the words that filled my albums to be lacking--in both quantity and quality.  Some years I was happy to just get pictures into my album and a date and place.

But this year I wanted something different...

On What's Different This Year...  It looks like we’ll have snow soon...the chill is definitely in the air! And it can’t come to soon for these two boys. This time last year they were building snowmen and having snowball fights. Caleb was teaching his younger brother not to eat yellow snow, while I was trying to teach Caleb not to eat snow at all! Its hard for them still,they don’t understand that the snow comes WHEN IT COMES!

My initial plan for 2013 was to take a daily approach with both my photos and my story, but after reading through the first lesson of "Your December Story" it became clear to me that this was not the only way to go and that perhaps broadening my  approach with regard to story, would help me to capture what had been missing in my previous December albums.

I feel like our family's December Story is just starting to become established and now is a perfect time to capture both the details and the depth of  our December.

On November's Challenges... November is typically a busy month for the Collard Clan. Every year I seem to cram more and more things that I don't want to deal with in December into our November. That along with the winter chill beginning to set in, makes this one of the least desirable months as far as I am concerned. It can be a real challenge to remember all the things we have to be grateful for at times. That's why we started our family's Gratitude Jar. It acts as a daily reminder of all the things we have to be thankful for in our lives.

I will be using the lessons and prompts offered in Your December Story to reflect on and record my family's holiday story in its entirety while accenting this story with my favorite photos from our day-to-day December life.  The flexibility of this approach has me excited for a number of reasons, the most appealing being that even if I forget to take a few pictures or nothing exciting happens on Day 13 or Day 22, I will still come away with a complete story of our December.

I created my page Tuesday Mornings using one of this month's new templates.  The minute I saw it I knew it would be perfect for recording my husband and I 's Tuesday morning ritual, in which we meet out front on our patio and share a hot drink and enjoy a few kid-free moments together.  And with this template's cute little doilies peeking out I thought it would be  just right for helping me to capture my story's charming and cozy feel.

I paired the template with this sweet little kit from Creashens, stitching from Anna Aspnes and wood veneer shapes from Sahlin Studio.

This month's templates were so inspiring!  And I think one of the best things about using a template you love is that is takes some of the burdens of designing a page off of you and allows you to feel more comfortable experimenting in other areas of your page.  In these pages I played around with color, patterns, embellishing and even my journaling, in ways I might not have if I wasn't already set on my page layout.

This template offered me the perfect opportunity to mix several patterns on the page in just the right amounts, while helping me record what I love most about my hobby.

I loved the layered photos on this template and often like to use duplicate photos with this type of approach.  I also used this template's sleek design as an excuse to be brave in my use of color and pattern and loved the end result.

And finally I used one of this month's Story Starters and one of the new templates to inspire this page about my son's Pre-K graduation.  The story starter really got me thinking about this event and the template gave me ample room to record those thoughts. And even though some of the page elements overlap my journaling, I have these thoughts saved in a Word document and can always include a clean version of the journaling on the back side of the page.

I have to say that this month's templates from Simple Scrapper had a huge impact on my decision to give the 8.5 x 11" page format a wholehearted try, as I loved the way my pages with the templates came out AND I also loved the amount of time that I found myself saving when using the smaller size and a template combined--what could be better than a 20-minute page?! TWO 20-minute pages of course !

My first page that I made using the letter-sized templates from this month, was the intro page to an album I started for my niece.  I thought 8.5 x 11 would be perfect because she is quite the artist and she can easily include her finished artwork to an album this size.  This is the page that really fueled the idea for changing sizes.

I used this month's Story Starters--based on the theme of "adventures"--to inspire me to record the memory of this special outdoor adventure to our favorite historic farm, in Spring Surprise.  We go every year to see the baby animals but this past year was special because my son pet the animals and fed them all by himself and was not even a little bit scared!

I used one of March's New templates for this page as well.  I loved the stack of patterned strips that underscore the photo--I think they turned out to be a great way to mix these beautiful colors and patterns and to help set the mood for my photo and its story.

For my page Oh Gourdy! I've used another one of the new templates from March, this time one of the letter-sized options.  I used a lot of soft colors here and then added this soft and hazy photo treatment to tie in my photo and create a really dreamy look  overall.  I completed this page using the letter-sized template as was and then selected all of my layers and dragged them onto a 12 x 12 canvas.  Finally I used the doilies and a few additional embellishments to merge the two canvases.

Welcome back to this month's Simple Scrapper Blog Hop!

The Premium Membership Templates and Story Starters for January are here!  And here's a look at how I was inspired to use them in my own memory keeping.

January's Story Starters are centered around Gratitude and led me to find this beautiful photo of my son laughing amongst the outtakes of our Christmas Card photo shoot and create my page The Sound of You.  Seeing this picture made me think about how often the sounds of my boys laughing, playing and enjoying one another, bring a smile to my face.

Here, I used a new template from the Premium Collection to help me turn a handful of my favorite vintage papers from Jenni Bowlin into a charming quilt-like background that compliments my vintage-treated photo.  As you can see, a blocked design like this one is great for mixing several patterned papers on a page.
